I am a marketer and sometimes I get jealous of our CFO.
And it’s not because she has great hair.
I am also occasionally jealous of our Chief People Officer.
And he’s well…kind of balding.
Why am I occasionally green with envy?
In marketing, it seems that there are new technological advancements all the time.
So much so, that sometimes I dread my own LinkedIn feed.
What are the new buzzwords that I don’t know yet?
What’s new in AI, AR, VR and any other initials that I should be researching?
What new platform is ‘disrupting’ modern marketing today. (There are literally 7,000.)
Will I be in a meeting, hear new jargon, and have to sneak a quick Google search to see what it means?
Then I look at my CFO and wonder, how many new ways are there this week, month or year to prepare financial statements or a read a balance sheet?
I look at my CPO and wonder, how many new ways are there this week, month or year to do performance reviews or screen applicants?
I’m not saying these C-suite roles don’t deal with innovations, but I’m fairly confident that they aren’t living in fear of their social channels.
Statistically speaking, the CMO role has the shortest tenure of the C-suite. The pace of MarTech surely contributes to that phenomenon.
I’ve personally settled on a few resources that keep me abreast with the latest changes, while still reminding me of the human side of marketing that is essential to success. They are:
- The Growth Show – This podcast that serves as a thinly-veiled promotion for HubSpot, but I love the way it explores exciting brands and the marketers behind them.
- Ann Handley’s newsletter – I can’t miss Ann’s newsletter since it is delivered each fortnight to my inbox. (Doesn’t ‘fortnight’ make it sound fancy?) It makes my inner content marketer sing with joy.
- Marketing Over Coffee – I can always trust this podcast to cover MarTech in a meaningful, applicable way.
If I regularly consume each of these, I don’t ‘fear my feed’ quite as much.
I can’t be the only marketer out there living podcast to podcast.
Do you worry about MarTech outpacing you?
Will you share your favorite resources to stay ‘in the know?’
